Facte About Texas Australian Shepherd

Origin

Texas Australian Shepherds are fondly called Aussies. Much confusion appears regarding their true origin. Some believe these were used as herding dogs by the Basque shepherds in Southern Spain. Most people go with the idea that this breed developed in western U.S in the late 19th century.

Characteristics

Medium sized Aussies are double coat dogs. Their coat can be single colored (black, red) or a combination (red or blue merle). The thickness of the inner coat depends mainly on the climate. Typical white marks can be seen on the face, legs and chest in combination with the coat. Fur covering the head is short. Texas Australian Shepherds are medium shedders and their eyes are blue, brown or amber. Some Aussies have mixed eye colors. Their tails can be naturally docked in some cases. Countries which allow docking have species with shorter tails. Males are taller and heavier than the females.  

Temperament

This breed is particularly energetic and intelligent.  They enjoy playing and even figure out tricks to fetch objects thrown into water or over the fence. Aussies are friendly dogs and go well with active individuals.  Popular games among Aussies are Frisbee and fly ball. Aussies are fond of playing in water too. A small mud puddle can be an interesting place to play.

They can be regretful for those who have no previous experience of keeping pet dogs. Unlike other breeds they require more than just a morning walk or repetitive stick fetching to keep them active.

They can be a little inhibited by the presence of strangers but this can be overcome by training. Devotion of the Aussies to their master makes them useful as watchdogs.  Aussies are obedient and perform the given duties very sincerely. This makes them a perfect choice for owners who want their pets to win competitions.

Lack of physical activity would lead to the bored pet becoming aggressive and suffer from behavioral problems.

Training

Aussies are intelligent dogs and do not need strict training. They pick up verbal commands very quickly. The Aussie can be a perfect pet in the hands of a skilled owner. Aussies are very aware of the owner’s presence.  Eating habits, potty training and socializing are the parts of early training.

Health care and grooming

The life expectancy of Texas Australian Shepherds is about 13 years.  Common health issues include hip, back and vision problems. Epilepsy and thyroid problems are also becoming a concern for Aussie owners. A number of health assessment tests have been developed.  Mostly these problems are genetic and can be reduced by doing careful breeding. A genuine breeder can be consulted to check for these issues.  Proper exercise and good nutrition can help prevent such health issues.

Grooming needs a little attention. A firm brush can be used for the coat and the procedure needs to be done occasionally. Shampooing should be done only if needed.
